Jersey City Welcomes Sub Culture To Newark Ave.

Newark Avenue in Jersey City is overflowing with an assortment of restaurants that bring the public eye into the city more often. A newbie to Newark Avenue’s restaurant strip is SubCulture, an over-the-top sandwich shop and restaurant focusing on the celebration of all things pop culture. SubCulture opened its doors on April 20.Owners Nick Roda and William "Billy" Visnosky chose Jersey City as Sub Culture’s location due to the fact that they were raised in the city. The sandwich shop has a lot of representation of pop culture from the 1980's and 1990's since those eras played a major part in Roda’s and Visnosky’s childhood. According to Roda, the pop culture is not limited to those two decades by any means. Game consoles ranging from Atari, Nintendo, Sega Genesis, and arcade classics featuring over 4000 games are stationed for patrons to utilize as well.“We have nostalgia as far back as the Roaring 20's and feature others from as recent as 2018,” said Roda. “We feature a 5000 song playlist that can be followed on Spotify via SubCultureJC that features artists ranging from Frank Sinatra, Spice Girls, Queen, Eminem, Nirvana, The Beatles and so much more.”SubCulture, indeed, is a place where individuals can stop by for a grand old time and some top-notch bites without breaking the bank. As for the enormous menu, the establishment includes everything from basic hot and cold sandwiches such as the Rutgers Fat-Boys to piled high outrageous creations such as the Parmageddon which are served in metal lunchboxes. Some of Sub Culture’s most popular sandwiches are family recipes including the "Why Did the Chicken Cross the Roda", which is named after the Roda family who started making Chicken Francese on garlic bread at Downtown Eddie's in 1994. The innovative iScream Shakes were inspired by Visnosky's children, whom he would create the shakes for at home.

"We felt that lunchboxes are THE only way to properly eat a sandwich as well as taking our customers back to their youth," said Roda.

SubCulture is located at 260 Newark Avenue and is opened Sunday from 4 pm to 9 pm, Monday from 11 am to 9 pm, Tuesday from 11 am to 9 pm, Wednesday from 11 am to 9 pm, and Thursday to Saturday from 11 am to 11 pm.
