Antique Loft Joins a Not-Very Crowded Event Space List in Hoboken

According to Jersey Digs, Chef Paul Gerard and his partner at the beloved Antique Bakery are opening up an event space in the penthouse of 33-41 Newark Street, a 4,000 square-foot space with incredible views of Hoboken and New York City. It’s called the Antique Loft, and the menu will be crafted from Antique Bakery (yay) and it’ll be a full-service event space, with cocktails, flowers, and music available in a one-stop fashion.

That’s great news, and not just because it offers us all another chance at eating some of Gerard’s incredible dishes—it’s great because Hoboken, for all it’s reputation as a party town, doesn’t have much to offer by way of event spaces, really. Considering the number of wedding gowns you’ll spot along the Hudson River during the nicer weather, that’s kind of surprising.

More Space Needed

Of course, there are tons of restaurants and bars that will be happy to host an event for you, but an Event Space is a specific thing—and all-in-one space with kitchen facilities, bar space, dance floor, and, above all, space. Sometimes a restaurant is fine, sometimes you need a huge room to gather in, and Hoboken doesn’t have too many of those. There’s the Elk’s Club, of course. You can’t get any more old-school than that, and there’s obviously a certain charm to going that route. It’s a big space and has everything you need, but its old-school feel and atmosphere can’t be over-stressed.

There’s Birch, which is obviously going to be a lot more modern and cutting-edge as well as a big open space ideal for just about any big gathering you have in mind. But if you go Birch, you’re going with a nightclub, and that feel is going to be everywhere. If that’s what you want, cool, obviously.Another alternative is the Kolo Club, located above (and operated by) the Pilsner Haus Biergarten uptown. This is a pretty cool space with a bar and access to the Haus kitchen, so it’s a great spot to host an event. The only downside, really, is that it’s uptown, so if you have folks coming over from New York on the PATH they’re going to have to hike quite a ways to get there.

This is why the new Antique Loft is genius. As an all-purpose, classy event space it won’t have the same baggage as the other options, is close to the PATH, and has a great pedigree when it comes to food and drink—and even music, judging from the playlist on rotation at the restaurant. In other words, this is great news for anyone who has or will have or hopes to have an event to host here in town.
